Why Do We Believe?

As I read and watch what goes on around me I am amazed at how much credence we give things, ideas, concepts which have no inherent substance.
Categorical statements of belief are made in and by financial instruments, advertisements, politicians, unproven scientific ideas, and the ability of unknown/unproven professionals.
