A sudden need arises and we call out to God in “Prayer”. A family member is taken ill or has a bad turn of affairs and we go to God in “Prayer”. The day has gone well, the sun is shining and all seems right with the world and we lift our hearts in joy (Prayer) to God. Taking a passage or phrase we sit quietly and meditate (Pray) on it. We head into a meeting and we lift a thought of petition (Prayer) to God as we walk into the room.
Everyday something happens and people call out in some form to God and a prayer is offered. When they call out to God they may be doing one of the following:
- Observing of a tradition
- Having an intimate conversation with God
- Petitioning a higher power for a need
- A family discussion between child and parent
- Light incense or fragrant herbs and smudging
- Placing requests and demands
- Submitting themselves to God
- Participating in the act / art of meditation
- Responding gratitude or supplication for a need and giving an offering
When a person says they are praying what do they mean? Is what I understand prayer to be the same as what they understand prayer to be?
I personally believe prayer is a conversation with God (who is my Father) where I not only discuss whatever but also present requests / needs to Him (the highest power) expecting an answer (preferably positive) because He has the ability and He loves me. I’m His child.
So my question is …
If someone asks me to pray or I ask them to pray what am I asking them to do or what am I agreeing to do? Are we, as the saying goes, on the same page?
What do you believe Prayer is?
