After you’ve said something have you ever had the thought … “What does that really mean?”
It seems to me that words often get thrown around with wild abandon without more than a passing understanding of what was just said. By example, if I ask a dozen different people what the word Faith means or a variety of other words or phrases I will get at least six different answers and in some cases a full dozen different responses.
One of the verses in the Bible I find most fascinating is the description found in Genesis 11 regarding the Tower of Babel and the people that were building it.
“And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” Genesis 11:6 KJV
What I see when I read this is a group of people who communicated completely and fully with each other. If person A said “X Y Zed” everyone who heard it understood and saw in their minds eye exactly what person A meant when he said “X Y Zed”
Nowadays we have all kinds of speak … Political Speak, Engineer Speak, Christian Speak, etc. and much of what is said is understood but not REALLY understood. For example, in art if I say the color is Blue then the image that comes to the hearers mind can be one of a thousand shades which may resemble but not match what was intended when I said Blue.
In the Christian walk we often use words such as Pray, Faith, Love, Word, Life, Surrender, Meek, and a host of others that we may or may not have a full understanding of and certainly may mean something else to someone else. Agreement is apparently pretty important since Jesus specifically tells us that it is an ingredient of successful prayer.
“Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 18:19 KJV
With this in mind I thought I’d focus for a while on the words and what they mean and how they are used. Taking words from normal “Christian Speak” and seeing what they say and mean.
Hmmm … did they mean “Blue” or “Blue” ???
